The Harvard Innovation Labs is delighted to share that two former Harvard Innovation Labs ventures have been selected as 2024 TIME Best Inventions: Bounce Imaging for its 360-degree tactical camera that can be thrown into dangerous situations, and Overjet for developing an AI-powered dental platform that detects oral diseases and evaluates x-rays.
Overjet secured FDA clearance to enhance dental images with AI in 2024. Previously, the company announced a partnership with DECA Dental Group, unveiled implementation in 2,000 dental practices, and was named one of American Business Journal’s 35 AI Startups to Watch and one of The Boston Globe’s Tech Power Players 50.
Overjet was a finalist in the 2020 Harvard President’s Innovation Challenge.
“Our first major customer on the insurance side was actually at the Harvard i-lab, which set us up for success,” said Wardah Inam, founder and CEO of Overjet. “When the chief dental officer and their SVP wanted to visit Overjet, we hosted them at the i lab... We spent a lot of time there. We grew the team there... The time we had at the i-lab when we were trying to make an idea come to life was very special.”
Bounce Imaging was one of the first ventures to receive support from the Harvard Innovation Labs, developing prototypes of its throwable tactical cameras at the i-lab in 2012. Since then, Bounce Imaging has built a suite of tactical, 360-degree camera systems used by over 450 state and local law enforcement agencies and first responders, the FBI, U.S. Marshals, and elite teams within the Department of Defense. This is the second time Bounce Imaging has been named a TIME Best Invention.
"This recognition speaks to the continued innovation we are bringing to first responders and defense,” said Francisco Aguilar, CEO and co-founder of Bounce Imaging. “Our first TIME award was for a camera whose prototypes built right at the Harvard i-lab when the i-lab first opened! The i-lab focus on impact in the world has been our guiding principle as well: we know from the feedback we receive that we are saving lives for first-responders, civilians, and warfighters as our cameras are used across the U.S. and around the world, from every level of Special Operations Command to every field office of the FBI."
The TIME Best Inventions list recognizes products, software, or services that are revolutionizing the world. Over the last six years, eight Harvard Innovation Labs ventures have been included on the list.
