Philanthropy is an untapped funding source for startups. In this session, Mike Rea will share how to secure charitable gifts and grants.
Philanthropy is a frequently overlooked source of capital for for-profit startups with a social impact. In this session, Mike Rea will break down how startups can effectively tap into charitable gifts and grants for project financing or equity funding—where donor-investors function much like traditional investors. We’ll explore the landscape of donor-advised funds and other giving vehicles, strategies for identifying potential donors within your network, and best practices for messaging and marketing this complementary funding option. This session is also valuable for i-Lab ventures structured as nonprofits.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Mike Rea has supported impact investing with personal and philanthropic capital since leading the climatetech angel investing network E8 and launching its sister Decarbon8 philanthropic investment fund (www.e8angels.com). He has founded or scaled two other social enterprises, international philanthropic services leader Give2Asia and the impact association for the travel and tourism industry, Tourism Cares. Additional experience in wealth management, client impact and strategic philanthropy come from leadership roles at Bank of America’s philanthropic client group and The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
