Dr. Jake Russell is a co-founder and CEO of Orpheus Ocean, a startup developing autonomous underwater vehicles for scalable ocean exploration. Orpheus was born out of Jake's previous role as Operating Partner with Propeller VC, where he worked in collaboration with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to commercialize academic innovations. Previously, Jake was a Fellow at ARPA-E, where he worked to develop multimillion dollar funding programs in freight logistics, ocean carbon measurement, and superconductors, and also spent time studying maritime decarbonization and macroalgae cultivation. He is an alumnus of the Clean Energy Leadership Institute DC 2022 cohort. Jake earned his PhD in materials chemistry at Columbia University, and his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Chicago, with a minor in molecular engineering.
