Eating disorders are the most fatal mental illnesses for adolescents in the United States, with a mortality rate 12 times greater than that of any other psychiatric illness. While 13 percent of youth in America will develop an eating disorder by the age of 20, only 10 to 20 percent will receive treatment. Eating disorders are preventable illnesses, making prevention programs a well-positioned but underutilized approach to transform health outcomes for at-risk youth. Body Empowerment Project is the first organization to address this mental health crisis through an evidence-based eating disorder prevention program for adolescents aged 12 to 18.
